The Ohio Division of Wildlife has a youth season for deer, bear and elk. The dates for the 2017-2018 season are Nov. 5-10 for deer and Nov. 5-12 for bear and elk. Make sure they have all the right equipment. If you’re going to take your child hunting, it’s important that they have everything they need. This includes appropriate clothing, boots, hats and gloves; a good pair of binoculars; and a rifle or shotgun that fits them properly. Make sure their rifle or shotgun has been sighted in for them so that it’s ready for action when it’s needed most — during youth season!
Teach them how to shoot safely before taking them out into the woods. Make sure they know how to hold their rifle or shotgun correctly, and how far back on the stock it should be held against their shoulder for maximum accuracy. Also teach them how to load/unload bullets into their weapon without hurting themselves — this takes practice!
